Art Work of the Day, Tues. May 26, 2009

CRI_109447

What: R.F., J.F., Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. 2001, Gelatin silver print, 18 1/8 x 22 1/2″ (46 x 57.2 cm)
Who: Nicholas Nixon (American, born 1947)

This beautiful black and white photograph of lovers in an embrace is housed at New York’s MoMA. The work is not currently on view… you can only find it through their website. It reminds me of Carolee Schneeman’s very erotic Fuses. But what I like about this photo, besides the anonymity imposed on such an intimate and personal moment, is the way Nixon captured the texture of the skin. The freckles and the stretch marks — these are not airbrushed models, they are humans captured in a very human moment.
